Leather Care and Maintenance 

At David Dyer Saddles, we recognize that investing in a new set of tack for your horse is a significant commitment. We also know the importance of maintaining your saddle and accessories to ensure they stand the test of time. Below are some basic leather care guidelines to keep your leather products looking and feeling their best for years to come.

General Leather Care

1. Protection Before Use:

- Before using your product for the first time, apply a light coating of a leather balm to protect it.

2. Regular Cleaning:

 -  Ideally after every use clean excess sweat, grease and dirt with a clean cloth dampened in warm water.

 - Then once a week to start with after cleaning, apply leather balm sparingly with a cloth or sponge to the dry leather.

- Always assess the condition of the leather.  If it feels too soft and saturated use less balm or product, if it feels dry - apply some conditioner/balm.  All leathers react differently and it is vital to follow any specified manufacturer guidelines.

- For saddles - most manufacturers recommend to only condition girth straps every 6 months to avoid over softening and therefore over stretching. 

3. Storage:

 - Always store leather at room temperature.

 - Avoid extreme conditions like excessive heat, sun exposure, and dampness.
