Insights into Saddle Fitting: Saddle Size

Horse First

This is always a sensitive issue, but we felt the need to share this story as it highlights a problem we often encounter during saddle fittings. A saddle must fit both the horse and the rider. Frequently, we see horses that can only take a 16.5” saddle paired with a rider who ideally needs a 17”. This mismatch can result from the height, weight, and/or build of the rider. When this issue arises, the rider tends to sit on the cantle rather than fully in the seat of the saddle, causing soreness behind and just at the back of the saddle. This can escalate to ridden behavioural issues, including bucking.

Finding the right saddle fit is crucial for both horse and rider. An ill-fitting saddle can lead to discomfort and behavioural issues in horses, making riding an unpleasant experience. This blog shares the story of one of our staff members, who faced a significant challenge when she couldn’t comfortably fit into her horse’s saddle. Through determination and hard work, she overcame this obstacle, and we’re excited to share her journey with you.

This was the situation one of our staff members Carly found herself in when she was asked to ride a horse for a family member. Armed with the knowledge she gained from working with our wonderful team of saddle fitters, she knew something had to change before she could start riding Silk regularly. Silk had exhibited behavioural issues such as unwillingness to go forward, difficulty picking up the correct canter lead, struggling to maintain canter, and bucking.
Carly set herself a weight loss goal and embarked on her journey. She followed a diet plan, and we all tried not to bring any sweet treats to the office to avoid temptation (which did us all a favor!). With a lot of willpower, she managed to reach her goal weight, losing a total of 2 stone. This allowed her to begin bringing Silk back into work. During Carly's downtime, Silk received a back treatment and a saddle fitting to ensure she was as comfortable as possible.

In the past few weeks, as Carly has gradually reintroduced Silk to ridden work, she has found Silk to be more forward and willing. Although still green in her schooling, Silk can now pick up and maintain canter on the correct lead without bucking. She remains her cheeky and sassy self, but the behavioral issues have significantly decreased. For Carly, the change has meant that she feels fitter and more able to ride correctly, fitting comfortably into the saddle rather than sitting on the back of it, she is no longer being tipped forward by the cantle.
